How to use
Men: waist must exceed neck. Women: waist plus hip must exceed neck. Measure waist at navel level (relaxed). Neck just under the Adam's apple. Women measure hip at the widest point. Weight is not in the Navy formula.
Example
Male, 175 cm, waist 90 cm, neck 40 cm gives about 19% and Fitness. A few centimeters on the waist changes the percent quickly, so repeat the same tape placement each time.
Tips
Navy tape estimates often sit within a few points of DEXA but can miss on very lean or very soft physiques. Measure every two to four weeks, not daily, because water shifts the tape. For composition goals, pair a moderate calorie deficit, enough protein, and resistance training. BMI and body fat together give a fuller picture than either alone.
